Bob Keiss with some of his first paintings

Last Friday we had Bob Keiss tell us about Camp Hale, halfway between Mintern & Tennessee Pass.  The 10th Mountain Division was housed there during WWII.  Bob was in charge of the division at the very end, and led the last contingent of mules away from Camp Hale.
Bob had many unique photos that were projected via an antique opaque that Don theorized "came out with the mules", but probably not.
Bob talked offhand about the 74mm howitzers that would break down into 6 sections that six mules would carry.  He told us how the gun could be dismantled & reassembled in under two minutes!  It was remarked at how smart the mules were!  If you missed this, you missed a really enjoyable, insightful, remarkable  first-hand account of the Mule Pack Artillery.

At the Board meeting on Tuesday a few weeks ago, we were told that we had a net return for all of the efforts from our golf tournament of (just short of) $4,300.
It was also mentioned that at our sister club, Overland Sertoma, any members who are delinquent in their dues are not only announced, but badgered!
Our
Board decided against that, at this point, but I would like to remind those members who are behind in their dues to please catch up!  We have a deficit of$3,000, with at least one member over a year behind in his dues.  Help us out!

Here's an unofficial # to get free information from your cell phone, 800.466.4411.  Most carriers charge between $.75 - $2.00 each for these info calls.  This one is NO CHARGE!  . . . . thanks, timmy!

Larry says he "is planning to have some surprise guests playing with us this year.  They are the type some may want to meet or even be photographed with."  Early entries are encouraged."  Hmmmmmm.

Ken Reiter reminded us that an evening with Shakespeare is coming up Friday,
the 20th.  He needs to get money from everyone who is going, so ante up!  Here's a link if you aren't familiar with this:  Colorado Shakespeare Festival

My Lucky Day!

Dr. John Mclean had a $10 brag that Sophie "would even show up at the meeting".  Someone shouted out "Make it $20", but I think $10 was all that was contributed.  As you can see, WE were the ones to benefit!

Ken Borrett bragged on #1 son, Jack . . . .   Jack is a manager of a Sofa Mart in Lincoln, NE . . . .  Seems his store (out of 65 Sofa Marts!) was #1 in percentage sales increase recently!  Ken also contributed $65 to the Foundation for a birthday last week.

Jim Norrgard and his wife recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on the longest day of the year", and had a check for the Foundation so we could all celebrate the occasion!

Don Wedum just turned 36 for the 2nd time, and had a check for the Foundation to celebrate the occasion.  Of course, he IS only 62!

Bob brought his own gallery, ranging from his wife, to his daughter, to his grandkids!

Terry Danielson had two brags ~ one for his father-in-law, Lynn, who excels not only in golf and tennis, and has qualified to be a professional bowler, but is a great natural athlete.  Terry was proud of him for all the above, PLUS, Lynn "stuck with being an eye doctor."  Terry also bragged on the golf Committee who really helped make the tournament a success:  Ken Borrett, Dave Blomberg, Don Simecka, Brad Dusek, Mike Tarantino, Randy Beaver, Jim Bernecker, Brad Burns, and Jim Manning.  He also had a special "thanks" for the volunteers for helping:  John K., Lee Cooper, Tom Bryan, and Paul McCoy.  Terry once again thanked Ken Borrett for providing the hole-in-one insurance.

Bill Brown bragged on Dave Armstrong, who missed the meeting 'cause Dave and wife Kay were in the mountains celebrating their 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!!!

As I get older I'm trying to simplify my life so I've boiled down my entire day into this pie chart ......

BABES were everywhere!

Everywhere

So was FOOD!

You probably know, this is MONEY!

Stoner talked about Brew Fest and the Installation, one of which will be held at his house.  We learned today (the 29th) that the club earned $1,437 for our part in helping make Brew Fest a success last week.  He also bragged for everyone who helped, with a special brag for Paul McCoy, who attended BOTH days!  Here are a few pictures:

Dancin' to the band

Wendy with some of the REAL MONEY collected.

Brad Burns bragged on US for everyone helping to sponsor the 9/21 CASA golf tournament.  This is a pre-event brag, so get ready to be involved!

It was brought up (thank you Nutter) that National Sertoma is changing the By-Laws, and we must change ours to maintain our 501 (c) (3) designation.  There was a motion for secession, but it seemed to die for a second.
For the real story:

S
ertoma President on the Merger Proposal
For some time now the Sertoma International board has been looking into ways to provide a single 501(c)(3) tax exemption status to our clubs. This is in response to requests from many clubs as their abilities to perform charitable fundraising are being called into question by changing and evolving regulations.  CLICK HERE

Stoner told us how, recently, a deer was killed and devoured on his property over a four day period by  a large, carnivorous animal.  (Uh, WHERE is our installation banquet being held!???!)

A replacement is needed for Frank Johnson on the United Way Special Needs Committee.  If you're interested, contact either Frank Johnson or Terry Danielson.  It was widely agreed by acclamation, however, that Frank has done a good job, and that he was more than qualified to hold the position for 4 more years!

Terry announced that, with OUR help, Realities for Children raised $41,000 for their emergency fund at the Poker Run.  Over 2,500 people attended, w/2,000 motorcycles!

Rob Allerheiligen bragged on ME for continuing to put out the newsletter ~ he told us that wherever he was in his travels, he always enjoyed catching up with what was going on in the club.  He told us a story, too, about finding E. Scott one day, tears streaming down his cheeks, who related how a friend of his had just told him that two Brazilian soldiers were killed that day in Iraq.  Rob didn't really understand why Scotty was so upset, and, upon closer questioning, E. Scott asked Rob, "Just how many IS a Brazilian?

Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face.
"Why do you do that, mommy?" he asked.
"To make myself beautiful," said his mother, who then began removing the
cream with a tissue.
"What's the matter?" asked Little Johnny. "Giving up?"

Dave Armstrong told us about his and Kay's celebration last week in Keystone with "35 of their nearest and dearest relatives".  He also had a check for the Foundation.  Terry D. took a look at the check and had to tell us what a lousy mathematician Dave is . . . the check was for $100.  Whatta' guy!

Ed Stoner highlighted (and thanked) the members who showed up for Brew Fest, helping out both the Downtown Business Association AND Sertoma.  The DBA had sales of close to $290,000 for the two days!

The Opaque Projector, originally intended for use as a defense against alien invasion.

Timmy bragged next, but first told us that he was over at Paul McCoy's house on Friday, and the only reason Paul was at Brew Fest both days was that he couldn't remember if he was signed up for Saturday or Sunday!   His brag, however, was that the iPhone was introduced today, but he couldn't tell us the downside to it because AT&T would fire them!  He DID inadvertently relate one downside, however, that the cost is $500 - $600!!

John Stouffer had a $20 brag involving the Rocky Mountain state boys championship, and his grandson, Jordan, who was on the team.

Larry Abrahamson told us that the D.A.T. golf tournament has been set for September 6th.  It will be held at Tyler Meadows, as it has been for the last 24 years.  He told us that there will be some "special surprise guests" playing, so sign up early to assure yourself a spot.  8 a.m. tee time  D.A.T. II - 2007 (click on it for registration form)

Norm told us (once again!) the the SOW-to-be forgot to send him the clues, so there was no SOW.  As I recall however, two weeks ago he told us that the SOW was not in attendance, so the trophy could not be passed on.  Either way, it's a good thing Norm's the Sgt. at Arms, or there might be a fine in the air.

Members of the Board met after today's program and voted to help sponsor Nathan Scott's fund-raising bicycling event for Turning Point.  The Overland Sertoma Club will be the main sponsor with a $5,000 contribution, and we will be a secondary sponsor with $1,500 being contributed.  The event will be held September 9th ~ more info as I get it.  Here is a link to a site on Turning Point:   Biking Event  (click on it)

Maureen

Maureen Carrigan, Originally from South Dakota, has worked for the Governor's office, on a US Senator's campaign, as a drug abuse counselor in WY, and has just left a position as a mentoring coordinator for the mentoring coalition, to begin with CASA.
Today, however, Maureen spoke with us about about MENtoring children, a subject obviously dear to her.  As a single mom, she is keenly aware of the constant need for good adult MALE role models.  She related to us the good any of us can do as adult role models for any of the children in need that she comes in contact with almost daily.
This was obviously a wonderful lady who spoke eloquently from the heart.  If YOU are interested in helping with mentoring, contact her at

710

A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten.

We all looked at each other and another customer asked, "What is a seven-hundred-ten?"

She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one.."

She replied that she did not know exactly what it was, but this piece had always been there.

The mechanic gave her a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like.

She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. He then took her over to another car which had its hood up and asked "is there a 710 on this car?"

She pointed and said, "Of course, it's right there."
