You may have noticed that I have not sent out a newsletter recently. My problem is that I am simply up to my ears in WORK. (Euuuuwwwwww!) This newsletter is a compilation of some (old) brags, some pictures I just don't have time to do justice to, but want to get them out, and pure information. Some day soon (maybe AFTER the big holiday I hear is coming!), I can get back to normal on the newsletter.

This is a story about a guy, a guy like most of us, common, questioning his existence, measuring himself to others, never believing in his abilities or his worth.
Then one day, his passion outgrew his fears as he stepped onto a stage; a stage that took him to a place beyond his self-imposed prison.

Dick Acott said he's "headin' south"
The next game is coming up on the 17th ~ Georgia Southern. Kick-off is at noon. Pick up parking passes on Friday, I'm sure.
Carl, a few weeks ago, told us he and his wife had just returned from spending 12 days on a lake. In spite of that, he says, "they still love each other".

Our absentee beer czar put in an appearance on Friday, so I snapped a quick picture. |
Norm was recognized and thanked for the GREAT job he's doing on the Directory. If you didn't get the email with the info, contact me.
Ed was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really angry.
She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in less then 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!"
The next morning Ed got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up she looked out the window and saw a small box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway.
Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.
Ed has been missing since Friday; please pray for him . . .
A recent study found the average American golfer walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found American golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer a year.
That means, on average, American golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind Of Makes You Proud, doesn't it? |
A former member, Reverend Bob Nelson died a few weeks ago. I know Conway or Bill Benton can give you more information if you want.

John K. tells us that at the Utah game the game crowd was much smaller and our beer sales of $3,172 were off -- even from the Air Force game of $5,024. Our tip collections were $250. Plus we earned $1,350 from the manpower we supplied. He plans to speak with Eric from SoDexHo this week regarding necessary manpower for the next (November 17th) game. He also tells us:
For the third quarter of 2007, our Sertoma Charitable Fund continued to show progress. Contributions were $5,830. This represents an 11.45% increase from our June 30, 2007 balance. The biggest donation during the period was $5,000 from our Club. Net earnings on investments for the quarter ended amounted to $1,315.36 or an annualized return of 10.335% on the June 30th balance.
|
As of September 30, 2007, the balance in the account was $58,056.38. |
John tells us that continuing contributions to the Fund from member birthdays and anniversaries can only continue this growth in the Fund's assets. The balance by year end should exceed $60,000.
When the Fund was started in 2001, its goal was to raise $75,000 as the base for a continuing endowment. At that point the earnings on the investments can be used for charitable activities of the Club. Hopefully, the goal for 2008 is to raise enough in additional contributions to meet this goal.
The Tuesday noon Rotary Club started a similar fund about 13 years ago and they now have $250,000 in their account. So, while investment earnings and appreciation in 2008 should reach $6,000, the key is to seek additional contributions to build the fund's corpus and allow us to get to the $75,000 balance in 2008.

The Animal Rescue Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific need — providing food for some of the 27 million unwanted animals given to shelters in the U.S. every year. Over 10 million animals are put to death every year in the U.S. alone because they are abandoned and unwanted.
Each click on the purple "Click Here to Give - it's FREE" button at The Animal Rescue Site provides food and care for a rescued animal living in a shelter or sanctuary. Funding for food and care is paid by site sponsors and distributed to animals in need at the Fund for Animals' renowned animal sanctuaries (including Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Texas and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in California), pet shelters supported by the Petfinder Foundation, North Shore Animal League, and other worthy animal care facilities supported by the GreaterGood.org foundation.
100% of sponsor advertising fees goes to our charitable partners. Click on the purple button to be taken to the Animal Rescue Site.

THE PROBLEM
SOME OF YOU ARE NOT OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THAT NEARLY EVERY FAMILY IN AMERICA WAS GROSSLY AFFECTED BY WW II . MANY OF YOU DON'T REMEMBER THE RATIONING OF MEAT, SHOES, GASOLINE, AND SUGAR, OR HAVING NO TIRES FOR OUR AUTOMOBILES, AND A SPEED LIMIT OF 35 MILES AN HOUR ON THE ROAD, NOT TO MENTION, NO NEW AUTOMOBILES. Read this and think about how we would react to being taken over by foreigners in 2008.

A (verbatim) Treatise from Dick Ziporlin, our newest Social Chairman
There will be a CHRISTMAS PARTY on Dec. 13 at John McLean's house from 6 to 11pm. The cost is $10 each which includes the main entrée only, as each member is requested to bring one pot luck dish (which Dick will alphabetize) or one appetizer, plus bringing their own drinks. A sign-up sheet will be passed around for a meeting or two. If you want to go but miss the sign-up, contact me at(226-4217 or astoriaz2@msn.com) soon. I need to have an accurate count for the caterer. The entrée will be smoked turkey and prime rib, and we will have someone to clean up afterwards. BEER BASH On the Beer Bash and fellowship happy hour, Pitcher's sports bar will be the place we will do this. Each 3rd Friday of the month, from 5-7 we will meet, and the prices are excellent. People that don't drink should not hesitate to come and drink soft drinks as the fellowship is the important thing. There is also free pool, and possibly a discount on snacks in the future. The happy hour prices of beer is 2.00 and house micro-brews- 3.00. We will have the first one next Friday, the 16th, but nothing in December due to all what's going on.
