THE DREADED "C" WORD - CAFFEINE

Some like it, some don't. Let's face it. . .one of the few legalized drugs available to us really hits the spot on occasion. Whether you get your daily dose in coffee or coke or water (!!), caffeine plays a real part in everyday life for a lot of people.

A few facts:

  • There can be a large variation in caffeine amounts even when prepared by the same person the same way, using the same equipment on the same day. You figure.

  • A 7 oz. cup of coffee has the following caffeine (mg) content, according to Bunker and McWilliams in J. Am. Diet. 74:28-32, 1979:

Drip Coffee 115-175 mg
Espresso (1/1/2 -2 oz. 100 mg
Brewed 80-135 mg
Instant 65-100 mg.

Tea is as follows:

Decaf, brewed 3-4 mg
Decaf, instant 2-3 mg
Iced Tea, brewed 40 mg.
Iced Tea, instant 30 mg

For Comparison, according to the National Soft Drink Association, a 12 oz. can has:

Coca-Cola 45.6 mg.
Mr. Pibb 40.8 mg
Dr. Pepper 39.6 mg.
Jolt 71.2 mg
RC Cola 36.0 mg
Canada Dry Cola 30.0 mg.
7-Up 0 mg.
