Coffee Prices... A lot of people wonder why coffee prices fluctuate. So do I, sometimes. I guess the simplest answer is "supply and demand". The harder answer is that coffee is a commodity, and as such, is bought and sold on speculation. If someone speculates, for example, that because winter is coming in Brazil, and there may be a frost that kills 30% of their crop, coffee prices will go up. If one speculates correctly, one can make (. . . . or lose!) a lot of money in the commodities market. Last updated Saturday, April 05, 2008
